The GREAT Family of Ohio DOs
The OOA is a divisional society of the American Osteopathic Association. The OOA advocates for all osteopathic physicians in the state, as well as medical students attending Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) and several hospitals which are institutional members.

Support Ohio’s osteopathic physicians in delivering principle centered medicine and achieving the quadruple aim through the practice of osteopathic medicine.

Founding Purposes
- To promote the public health of the people of Ohio;
- To cooperate with all public health agencies;
- To maintain high standards at all osteopathic institutions with the state;
- To maintain and elevate osteopathic medical education and postgraduate training programs in the prevention and treatment of disease;
- To encourage research and investigation, especially that pertaining to the principles of the osteopathic school of medicine;
- To maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct in all phases of osteopathic medicine and surgery; and
- To promote such other activities as are consistent with the above purposes.

Goals
- Provide high quality and convenient continuing medical education programs that support physicians in achieving the quadruple aim: better outcomes, lower cost, improved patient experience and improved physician experience and well-being.
- Advocate on behalf of the osteopathic profession to create the enabling environment to improve the health of the people of Ohio and achieve the quadruple aim (e.g. policy, regulation, funding representation in the American Osteopathic Association).
- Serve as the unifying platform for osteopathic medicine in Ohio supporting cross-site connections and learning, linking policy, practice and education, and promoting osteopathic identify.
How We Meet Our Goals
We protect the right to practice osteopathic medicine by supporting legislative and regulatory initiatives.
We enhance public awareness of the osteopathic profession through an ongoing education and marketing plan directed at one or more specific target groups so that DOs are selected as physicians of choice by these targets.
We preserve osteopathic principles by (a) supporting osteopathic medical education and research at the pre and postdoctoral levels and (b) providing outstanding and innovative continuing medical education through the Ohio Osteopathic Foundation.
We strengthen the practice of osteopathic medicine by (a) maintaining the highest ethical and business standards and; (b) developing innovative programs which improve quality of patient care, promote innovative practice management skills, and reduce individual practice expenses.
We promote the public health of the people of Ohio by cooperating with public healthcare agencies, organizations and coalitions to prevent disease and improve public safety through appropriate education, legislative and regulatory initiatives.
Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine
DOs are trained to promote the body's natural tendency toward self-healing and health. The Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine express the underlying philosophy of osteopathic medicine and were approved by the AOA House of Delegates as policy.
- The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.
- The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.
- Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
- Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.

Osteopathic Pledge of Commitment
As members of the osteopathic medical profession, in an effort to instill loyalty and strengthen the profession, we recall the tenets on which this profession is founded: the dynamic interaction of mind, body and spirit; the body’s ability to heal itself; the primary role of the musculoskeletal system; and preventive medicine as the key to maintain health. We recognize the work our predecessors have accomplished in building the profession, and we commit ourselves to continuing that work.
